Disabled is NOT a bad word! ♿

Jenni sat in her electric wheelchair in the park wearing a vertical striped red, yellow, blue, green and white dress and white wedges. The words Disabled is not a bad word are to one side of her

As a society we can become really uncomfortable using the word disabled. All over the world you can find different euphemisms for disability; differently abled, handicapable, people of determination etc but these are all pretty unnecessary. Using these euphemisms can be belittling, infantilizing and frustrating for disabled people.

Disabled does not mean less than, it is a neutral term. And if we get more comfortable embracing & accepting the word for what it is, as opposed to shying away from it, I think the world would be a better place. Disability would be discussed & thought about more openly as opposed to being a taboo subject and this could lead to more accessibility & inclusivity for everyone.

What’s the wildest term you’ve heard to refer to a disabled person in order to avoid using the word Disabled?
