If you only had one pair of shoes for every occasi

If you only had one pair of shoes for every occasion or activity you would struggle! Just like if you're disabled and you only have one piece of mobility equipment.

You wouldn't wear high heels to the beach and I wouldn't use my walker in the shower because although you might just about manage they aren't the right tool for the job.

So if a disabled person is using a different mobility aid to what you expect it's not because they don't need it or are feeling better it's because they need the right tool for the job.

If someone isn't using an aid they are probably feeling worse for going without it, just like you would if you had to walk around barefoot all day.

So just like you wear different shoes for different days or activities is perfectly valid for a disabled person to use different mobility aids & equipment depending on the day, the activity or their symptoms.

Welcome back to Accessible Hack or Send It Back: the series where I try accessible gadgets so you don’t have to.⁠

Today I’m testing out the Dr Chilly’s Ice Ring , a reusable cooling neck ring made from a special material developed by NASA (fancy!) that’s designed to absorb, hold, and release heat to help keep you cool or ease pain.⁠
⁠
Plus points: It has no condensation which means no wet feeling, and it stayed cool for around an hour while I wore it.⁠
⁠
The big selling point for me? That it could refreeze quickly without needing a freezer. Apparently, it can refreeze in cold water in 30 minutes or in the fridge in 20.⁠
⁠
But… not quite. It took 2 hours in the fridge to feel cold enough, and after over an hour in cold water, it hadn’t refrozen at all.⁠
⁠
It does freeze super fast in the freezer – but I’ve already got plenty of cooling aids that do that. I was hoping this would be a reliable on-the-go option, and it just isn’t.⁠

Phrases You Didn’t Know Were Ableist – Part 1

Welcome back to Disability Education 101! I’m Chronically Jenni, and I’m here to tell you all the things you never learned about disability.

Some everyday phrases might seem harmless but actually have ableist roots. So let’s break down a few and learn what to say instead:

1. “Able-bodied”
This one’s common, but a bit misleading. It implies disabled people don’t have bodies that are valid or 'able'. It also implies that all disabilities are physical and to do with the body which is not the case. A better term is non-disabled, it’s more accurate and inclusive.

2. “Dumb”
Dumb originally referred to people who couldn’t speak, especially those who were Deaf or non-verbal. Over time, it became an insult — but it’s still rooted in the idea that communication differences mean someone is less intelligent.
Instead, try saying silly, uninformed, or be specific about what you mean.

3. “Lame”
This one literally comes from describing people with mobility impairments. Over time, it became slang for something boring or uncool — but using disability as an insult reinforces stigma.
Try unfunny, awkward, or just… not great.

4. Using conditions casually “I’m so OCD” / “Are you blind?”
When we casually use medical conditions like OCD or blindness to describe preferences or mistakes, it trivialises real experiences. Instead of 'I’m so OCD', say 'I like things tidy'.
Instead of 'Are you blind?', try 'Did you see this?' without turning a condition into a punchline.

This isn’t about being perfect, even I still make mistakes trying to unlearn some of these! So it’s about being more mindful. Small changes can make our language a lot more inclusive.

They never say someone has “given up” when they wear glasses, so why do they say it about wheelchairs?

Using a mobility aid isn’t giving up. It’s gaining freedom, energy, and safety. No one questions a tool that helps you see, so why question one that helps you move?

Both are tools that support our bodies to function in the way we need. Neither is a failure. Neither is giving up. They both give us access. to things

Let's stop framing mobility aids as a last resort and start recognising them as something valid & empowering.

Welcome back to Accessible Hack or Send It Back: the series where I try accessible gadgets so you don’t have to!

Today I’m testing out the Solar Buddies reusable sunscreen applicator. It’s made for kids but that also makes it brilliantly accessible for many disabled people.⁠
⁠
You can decant up to 100ml of your favourite sunscreen (or any cream with a similar texture) into it.
⁠
The lid takes a little grip to remove but that means it won’t pop off in your bag.
⁠
The handle is really ergonomic and low-effort to hold, and the applicator itself is a rollerball and sponge combo so it glides on easily with minimal mess and no gooey hands.
⁠
It delivers just the right amount of product, can reach tricky areas, and needs hardly any rubbing in. Total gamechanger!⁠

This is 100% coming on holiday with me and living in my handbag from now on – but what do you think?

I got a tattoo! And ticked my 7th new thing off my

I got a tattoo! And ticked my 7th new thing off my 30 New Things in My 30th Year list!

Back in February, I went to see my amazing tattoo artist @Lemon.Juice.Tatts at @SouthCityMarket for a patch test, basically a tiny tattoo to check how my skin would react (and thankfully, no allergic reaction here!).

We tweaked the design slightly on the day, picked the perfect placement and size, and before I knew it I was on the bed getting tattooed… and honestly? It felt like she was just drawing on me with a pen! Way quicker and less painful than I expected.

Now I’ve got my two beautiful girls—Honey the hedgehog and Coco the labradoodle—on my hip with me forever, and I’m in love!
